An optical flat is an optical grade glass substrate that has been lapped and polished to an extremely flat surface on one or both surfaces. The certified optical flats can be used to measure the quality of other optics when exposed to monochromatic light. The number of Interference fringes indicates the quality of the optics being tested.
Coated optical flats can also be used as precision mirrors in a laser cavity and instruments such as Fabry-Perot Interferometer.
